Top 5 Wednesday: Favourite Unlikable Protagonists

top wed goth

Top 5 Wednesday is hosted by Samatha at Thoughts on Tomes. The guidelines and topics can be found on the Goodreads group.

“People always tear down “unlikeable” protagonists. But tell us the ones you pulled for!”

When I saw this topic I was very excited. I love talking about flawed characters. But, then, I realized it’s actually hard to find 5 unlikeable protagonists that I love. :O This is what I came up with in the end:

1. Catherine Earnshaw (Wuthering Heights)

giphy

I don’t think Cathy is unlikeable, but many people hate her, and I can understand why. Well, not completely… Did she make mistakes? Yes. Is she a horrible human being? No, I don’t think so. I think she was just very unhappy, and I felt sorry for her. And I liked her very much.

2. Rorschach (Watchmen)

Is Rorcharch a bad person? Absolutely. And yet, I found him very interesting and I felt really sorry for him. Having a horrible life doesn’t justify being horrible to other people, but despite being brutal, Rorschach did possess certain (questionable) ideals, and he followed them no matter what.

3. Carmilla (Carmilla)

She’s a vampire, a blood-sucking monster. But what can I say, I love vampires. XD And I actually think Carmilla kind of liked Laura. Who knows? We never heard her side of the story.

4. Lestat (The Vampire Chronicles)

giphy (4)

This is a cheat, because everyone likes Lestat. He did some bad things though, and you couldn’t call him a likeable person, um, I mean vampire. XD But I love him, and I love whiny Louis as well.

5. Severus Snape (Harry Potter Series)

giphy (7).gif

Snape is not exactly a protagonist, but I think he fits the theme well. Though many people love him, he’s not a really nice person. I completely understand people who hate Snape, and I agree with them. Yes, some bad things happened too him, but that doesn’t justify the way he acted towards Harry, Neville, and other students. Also, he was a Deatheater. However, I found him intriguing, and I have to admit I was happy that in the end he did something heroic. At that point, I kind of rooted for him, though I hate to admit it…

That’s it! Now, are there any character you like, though you feel that you should hate them? XD

Top 5 Wednesday: Books that Would Make Good Video Games

top wed goth

I wasn’t sure what to do with this topic… I like to play video games, but most of the books I read are not very action packed. And, yes, not all video games are action games, but it was still hard to find the books that would fit this topic. Here’s what I came up with:

1. Tales of the Ketty Jay series by Chris Wooding

62859031.jpg

This was the first series that came to mind. It would be a fun adventure, and yes, there would be lots of different action missions. It would be amazing to step into the role of an airship pirate!

2. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

14497

Several Neil Gaiman books would be really fun as video games, but, in my humble opinion, this is the most game-like one. The world of London Below hides a lot of traps, and you also have to escape the creepy thugs Croup and Vandemar… A lot is going on in this book!

3. Vicious by V. E. Schwab

13638125.jpg

Victor and Eli have superpowers, and that is a great start for a game. I also think it would be interesting to be able to choose to play either as Victor or as Eli. The game could add a bit more of what they did in the meantime – especially with Eli hunting all the people with powers – before the final conflict between the two.

4. Alice by Christina Henry

23398606

This would be a great horror game, with a lot of puzzles and dialogue. Not for kids at all, though. XD This retelling of Alice in Wonderland is very creepy and violent, but I think it would look great as a game.

5. Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Yes, I know Harry Potter games already exist, but I would like a game where you create your own character, and go to Hogwarts. It would be so amazing, like a combination of Pottermore and The Sims, I don’t know… XD But if we can’t go to Hogwarts we can at least play a game where we do. 😉

So, would you want to play these games?

Top 5 Wednesday: Fictional Jobs I’d Want to Have

top-wed-goth

Top 5 Wendesday is hosted by Samatha at Thoughts on Tomes. The guidelines and topics can be found on the Goodreads group.

This week’s topic, as the title says, is to choose five fictional careers you’d want to have. This one was a bit hard for me, since there are not many truly fictional careers in the books I’ve read. In the end, this is what I came up with:

1. Magizoologist (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)

Do I even have to explain this? Studying magical creatures is the best! Also, this means I’d be a witch, and that’s something I really want to be. 😉

giphy.gif

2. Dragon naturalist (A Natural History of Dragons)

This career is similar to the previous one. In the book, Lady Trent goes on an expedition to study dragons. I love dragons, and I would love to do the same!

3. A member of the Ketty Jay crew (Tales of the Ketty Jay series)

An airship pirate? Count me in! Yes, the characters of this series get in a lot of trouble, and the captain doesn’t always know what he’s doing, but as the story progresses they really become one big family. And everyone is crazy in their own way. XD

DSC02803 (2).jpg

4. Digidestined (Digimon)

I’m not sure if this can be considered a job, but Digidestined are children chosen to travel to the Digital World and raise their Digimon. Together, they fight the evil Digimon that threaten the Digital World. I loved Digimon when I was a kid, more than Pokemon. It had a better and more complex story, and I was never really comfortable with the idea of Pokemon fighting one another for no apparent reason… Anyway, I’d love to have a Digimon friend. 🙂

giphy-1

5. Antari (Shades of Magic series)

Not really a career either, but Antaris who have the rare ability to travel between different worlds are often “employed” by the rulers of Londons to carry their messages. Now, I have to be careful with this one, because it’s dangerous. I have to admit I’m not quite sure if I really want this, but I do love magic and the idea of travelling between worlds is a very appealing one. To be honest, I didn’t know what to put as my last pick, it was between this and being a superhero but “with great power comes great responsibility” and I’m not sure if I want that kind of pressure. XD

So, those are my picks. What do you think, would you like to have one of these jobs?

Top 5 Wednesday: Fictional Items I’d Give as Gifts

top-wed-goth

This Top 5 Wednesday topic really made me think… Most of really interesting (and helpful) fictional items that I know of come from the Harry Potter universe. But it would be silly to just name those when there are so many books out there! So I decided to choose just one item from Harry Potter. Here’s what I came up with in the end:

1. A Time-Turner (Harry Potter Series)

hpnbtime.jpeg.jpg

My first choice from Harry Potter would definitely be a Time-Turner. Everyone needs more time! 24 hours a day is sometimes just not enough to do everything yoou need to do. But I would have to be very careful, and give this to a person who would not use it to change the past and make a total mess. (I’m looking at you, Barry Allen!)

2. A flying carpet (One Thousand and One Nights)

vasnetsov_samolet

Why not a magic lamp, you ask. Well, people always wish for the wrong things, and they often get tricked… So a flying carpet is a much better gift. And if it’s as cute as in the Disney Aladdin movie, even better. 🙂

3. Dorothy’s silver/ ruby slippers shoes (The Wizard of Oz)

ruby_slippers1

With these, you could basically teleport yourself wherever you want to go. Do I need any more explaining to do? Free travel!

4. Hoverboard (Back to the Future)

giphy

Not from a book, but still fictional. I know some people who would be really happy to have one. 🙂

5. Mary Poppins’ bag

source

A bag that fits everything! Very, very practical for the people who like to travel. (I don’t know if she has one in the book though, I only watched the film, sorry…)

So, would you be happy to get some of these as a gift? Or is it just me? XD

Marry, Kiss, Cliff Tag

Untitled.png

This is going to be silly and fun! Thank you Misty for tagging me to do the Marry Kiss Cliff tag! ❤ You can all check out her post here. You should check out her blog in any case!

Now, let’s get started!

The rules are simple:

  1. Put names of characters (whatever sex you’re attracted to) written in pieces of separate papers in an empty jar or a pen holder.
  2. Shake the jar.
  3. Pull out 3 pieces of paper in each round and tell us which character you would Kiss, Marry, or Cliff!

I tried to mix some nice and some horrible characters, so we’ll see how this ends. There will be five rounds in my case, that’s how many little papers I cut from the piece of paper I had. XD Here it goes!

Round 1: Lestat (The Vampire Chronicles), Victor (Vicious) and Spider-man

As much as I love Lestat, I’m not sure I’d like to marry him. But I want him to make me a vampire. 😛 And that means I don’t want to cliff him and makke him angry. (Cliffing him wouldn’t kill him, of course.) So I guess I’ll kiss him, and we can be friends later. I would cliff Victor because I would definitely marry Peter Parker. Always marry Peter Parker! Hopefully, a villain won’t kill me.

Round 2: Ron Weasley (Harry Potter series), Elend Venture (Mistborn series) and Frey (Tales of Ketty Jay)

Well, first of all, I would kiss Frey. Again, not the guy I would like to marry, but I really like him so no cliffing. And now we have a problem… Elend always seemed very attractive to me, but I don’t want to kill Ron. Nooo! Then again, Elend kind of lost his attractiveness later on, when he became a king and stopped being buried in books all the time. So I’ll chose Ron, and cliff Elend. Sorry!

Round 3: Eli (Vicious), Rochester (Jane Eyre), Kell (Shades of Magic series)

Out of these three, I would definitely marry Kell. As much as I don’t like Rochester, I hate Eli’s fanaticism more, so I’d kiss Rochester and cliff Eli.

Round 4: Victor Frankenstein (Frankenstein), Koscei (the one from Deathless, not from folklore), Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter series)

Oh, come on! I can’t marry anyone! I’m in trouble whoever I marry! Frankenstein is egocentric and heartless, Koscei is basically the villain of Russian folklore, and Draco wanted to get Buckbeak killed! (Yes, that’s the thing I can’t forgive him.) And I can’t really cliff Koscei, he can’t die. Let’s just pretend this never happened, shall we? 😉

Round 5: Voldemort (Harry Potter series), Heatcliff (Wuthering Heights), Tyrion Lannister (ASOIAF)

Well, let’s pretend I can actually cliff Voldemort…  Why did I even write his name down? I’m crazy… Anyway, I’d cliff him after all the horcruxes are destroyed because I don’t want to just make him angry. If he falls, he has to stay down. XD I’d kiss Heatcliff because I definitely wouldn’t want to marry him, but I feel sorry for him and I don’t want to cliff him. So, that means I would marry Tyrion. XD

Hope this was fun for you! 😉

Now, I’ll tag a few people. If you want to do the tag, I’d be happy to read your posts, but of course, you don’t need to do it: NicoleBeatrizJenZezeeAnna.

11 Random Facts About Me

  1. I don’t believe in the cat-person dog-person distinction. – I love both cats and dogs and I don’t see why one should exclude the other. Love all the animals! 🙂
  2. I collect postcards. – I love to travel, but I also like it when other people travel and bring me postcards. Travelling is amazing and it makes you a richer person, and postcards make me remember that.
  3. I have a poster of John William Waterhouse’s “The Lady of Shalott” in my room. – I bought it when I was in London and it’s one of my most prized possesions. I love the painting and I love the poem by  Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
  4. I own a sword. – It’s not sharpened, though. XD It was a gift from my parents. I’m a self-proclaimed pacifist, but am weirdly obsessed with swords. Maybe because of all the fantasy stuff…
  5. I love Disney films. – I feel like I’ve mentioned this before, but never mind. Sometimes I just listen to the songs, especially the villain ones.
  6. I love Emilie Autumn. – Have you ever listened to her? Well, most people I talked to don’t like her, but I think she’s amazing. Especially the “Opheliac” album. Wonderful.
  7. I love gothic-inspired outfits. – And my favourite colour is black. XD
  8. I love plushies. – I still have quite a few in my room. Childish? Yes, but I’m not sorry for it. 😉
  9. I loooove chocolate. – Who doesn’t, right?
  10. I’m a Slytherin. – On every quiz ever. I took the Pottermore quiz twice and both times I got the same. I thought I would be a Hufflepuff, honestly. But I’m kind of proud for being a Slytherin. 😉
  11. I really don’t know what else to say, so I’ll just mention that I’m currently reading Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter and I think it’s really good and unique.

Q & A

  1. How did you come up with your blog concept? – Well, I just wanted to create a place to talk about books and post some of my stories, and it started from there.
  2. What inspires you to keep blogging? – The books I read. And when it comes to stories, anything can spark my imagination. Something happens, and the idea just comes. I can’t explain it any better.
  3. What are you currently reading (or most recently read)? – I’ve just finished Evelina by Fanny Bourney, it was more fun than I thought it would be. And I already said what I’m reading now.
  4. What’s the scariest book you’ve ever read? – I’ve read some scary books, but the most disturbing one for me was American Psycho. I loved it, and I though it was really well done, but it is quite disturbing.
  5. Are you a night owl or a morning bird? – I’m more of a night owl, since I hate getting up early, but I like late mornings.
  6. What in your life are you most proud of? – This is a really hard one… I don’t really know what to say. XD
  7. Who is your hero? – It may sound cheesy, but I’ll say my parents. They are great.
  8. Do you have a phobia? If so, what is it? – Not really, but I’m quite afraid of dark (I slept with lights on when I was a child) and public speech.
  9. If you were to write the story of you, what genre would it be and why? – I would personally like to be in a fantasy story, and meet dragons. Does that count?
  10. What is the best movie you’ve seen recently? – It wasn’t that recently, but I’ll say Birdman. I really liked that movie.
  11. What’s your biggest pet peeve? – When someone is just too irresponsible. In most cases, other people have to suffer for it.

Addams Family Book Tag

Stock image from Pixabay.com

Stock image from Pixabay.com

This tag was made by Hannah booksandbeauty on Youtube, and since October, my favourite month, is in its full bloom and Halloween’s approaching, I thought it was a perfect tag to do. You can watch the original video here. Now, let’s get started!

1. Morticia Addams, the mother and a witch. – What is your favourite witch book?

The witch books by Terry Pratchett, from his Discworld series, starting with Wyrd Sisters. Terry Pratchett was a genious.

2. Gomez Addams is a loving father. – Who is your favourite fictional dad?

Arthur Weasley, from the Harry Potter series. He’s an amazing dad and an amazing person in general. Weasleys are such a great family…

3. Uncle Fester Addams can generate electricity. – What book makes you light up so much that you can’t stop yourself talking about it?

There are several… It was Harry Potter for my entire childhood. Lately, it’s The Last Man by Mary Shelley. Even though Frankenstein is one of my favourite books of all time, I’ve read this book only recently. I loved it, and I just want everyone to love it as much as I did… And that’s why I wrote a post about it. And if you like Mary Shelley and nice illustrations, just click HERE. Do it. Trust me.

4. Wednesday Addams is obsessed with death. – If you could have killed off a character in any book who would it have been?

I’m actually looking through my shelves for this one… And I really don’t know. There are some characters I hate but I still wouldn’t kill them because you need those characters as well.

5. Pugsley Addams has a vicious nature and plays nasty pranks on everyone. – Who is your favourite villain?

I’d say the Frankenstein’s monster, but he’s not really a villain. And I don’t want to say Voldemort because I mention Harry Potter too much as well. So, I’ll say Patrick Bateman from American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. He’s horrible, and the entire book is from his perspective so it makes you feel quite disgusted and disturbed… However, I think it’s a great book, even though being inside Patrick’s head cannot be described as a pleasant experience.

6. Lurch is based on Frankenstein and a zombie. – What is your favourite adaptation (book/film) of a story?

I usually get disappointed by adaptations. But a really great one would be Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I’m not sure if it could be described as an adaptation, but it deals with the characters from Jane Eyre, focusing of the story of Rochester’s “crazy” wife Bertha Mason (or Antoinette). It’s just great and deals with so many themes which were never addressed in Jane Eyre. And it will make you feel so many emotions…

7. Grandmama is an old classic witch. – What is your favourite old classic horror book?

OK, I think it would be stupid to mention Frankenstein again. XD So, my second favourite would be Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. Carmilla is amazing!

8. Show us some of your horror books.

Well, the tag was made for Youtube, but I decided to actually show them anyway. Some of these are not really horror, but they have some horror elements and are often classified as such.

20151020_161028

9. What are you going as for Halloween this year?

We don’t actually celebrate Halloween in my country. For the last decade or so there are some Halloween parties organized in my town, but it’s not really a part of our tradition. I do like the idea of Halloween and my friends and I did dress up a couple of times. We were the Addams family once, actually XD We don’t have anything planned for this year yet.

10. Favourite Halloween films!

The Addams Family, of course. XD I also love The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie… Creepy and cute at the same time, it’s just my kind of thing. When it comes to horror films, I’d suggest a Korean one because I don’t think many people know about it – The Tale of Two Sisters. It’s really creepy, and it will leave you wondering what had actually happened.

So, hope this was fun for you. And happy Halloween! 🙂
