Top 5 Wednesday: Current Favourites that Aren’t Books

If you want to join, Top 5 Wendesday guidelines and topics can be found on the Goodreads group hosted by Samantha.

Oh, I love this topic! As much as I like talking about books, it’s nice to talk about some other things I like for a change. And I’m looking forward to finding out what other Wednesdayers love! 🙂

Anyway, here are some things that I love at the moment:

1. Food: Homemade Almond Butter

As I mentioned in my previous post, I discovered how to make homemade almond butter a few months ago, and I fell in love with it! It’s yummy and healthy, and you can make a lot of other things with it. I also started making my own granola bars.

2. Series: Black Sails

Now, this isn’t something I’ve just recently discovered, but the first episode of the 4th and last season of this series premiered on 29th January so I think it’s the perfect time to talk about it. I love this series so much! It’s a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, but it’s much more than that.

3.  Film: Split

I didn’t think I would love it, but this is the best film I’ve seen lately. And James McAvoy is amazing at playing all those personalities! The film did make me feel uneasy, though, and I even dreamt it. It was more of a nightmare than a dream actually. XD

4. Lifestyle: Yoga

I’m still a complete beginner, but I’m really, really loving it! I’m not the kind of person who likes to exercise, but yoga makes me feel great. 🙂 (P.S. I’m definitely not as good as the girl on the photo.)

Thanks for the almonds and yoga photos! 🙂

Reading on the couch or the bed?

I mostly read on my bed, but the couch works for me, too.

Male main character or female main character?

I have to say that I like both equally. The only thing that’s important to me is that the main character is interesting.

Sweet snacks or salty snacks when reading?

Sweet snacks! I always choose sweet snacks. And a cup of tea.

Trilogies or quartets?

I think that three books are enough. And more than four is just too much, at least for me. Actually, I prefer stand-alones to any kind of series.

Series or stand-alones?

It seems I’ve already answered this, ooops. XD

First or third person point of view?

Both! I really can’t choose… Both  can be done great. I’m leaving quite a lot of these questions unanswered, it seems. So indecisive. XD

Reading at night or in the morning?

Whenever I have the time! 🙂 But I like to read before I go to bed, if I’m not too tired.

Libraries or bookstores?

I like both, but the problem is that I can rarely find the books I want in either of them in my town. So I’ll say bookstores, but somewhere abroad. XD

Books that make you laugh or books that make you cry?

Books that make me cry, though I rarely do that, I just suffer from the inside. XD

Black or white book covers?

I actually prefer black or white covers to any colour. But if I had to choose between the two, I’d say black.

Characters or plot?

This is a really hard question… I think that it has to be a combination of both. However, boring characters can make any plot boring, so maybe characters… I don’t know (once again). XD

So, that was it. I decided not to tag anyone this time, beecause I can never tell who likes to be tagged and who doesn’t. But if you want to do it I’d be happy to hear your answers! 🙂

Be Crazy to Be Kind (Theo’s perspective)

So, did you miss me? Do you want to know what’s happened since the last time we talked?

Maybe I should stop talking to myself. Narrating your own life cannot be healthy. But embracing the madness is sometimes just what you need.

Anyway, not much happened, except for that one important thing. And the fact that I’ve become a murderer.

First, let me say that Eric Leigh and I have agreed on a very simple plan. He wants to destroy the ministers, my father is one of them; I’ve got the information, he’s got the means.

“But why should I trust you?” he asked me. “Why would you want to destroy your own father?”

“I have a reason much purer than yours,” I replied. “I want revenge.”

Leigh smiled knowingly. He decided to trust me.

It won’t be possible to realize the plan soon, but it isn’t hard for me to wait. I’ve never been of the impulsive kind. I felt calm, for the first time in months. But with a father like mine, I should’ve known I was not supposed to feel that lucky.

I came home yesterday, and wanted to see my sister. Alexandra had told me the day before that she was in love with Ryder Thorne, a self-proclaimed rock star and a completely unreliable guy if you ask me, and I hadn’t reacted well. I wanted to apologize to her. Even if she’s making a mistake, it’s her mistake to make. I shouldn’t treat her like father does, and keep her locked up at home.

I went to Alex’s room and knocked. She wasn’t there. If she had gone out, she would’ve told me, so that I could cover for her and make sure father didn’t notice. I started to fear that she was too angry at me to ask for help. I decided to wait in the living room and hoped she would arrive soon. As I was passing though the hallway, father appeared and got in my way.

“If you’re looking for Alexandra, she’s not here,” he said without being asked. He was proud of his words. He wanted me to know what had happened.

“What have you done?” I started to panic.

“She’s with her fiancé. I told him to take her with him.”

I felt a strong urge to grab him by the neck and squeeze. But I didn’t have the time for that.

“How did you convince her to go,” I hissed.

“Tybolt is much stronger than our little Alex. What could she do? You see, things always go the way I want them to. Alexandra is going to marry the man I want her to marry.”

“She’s your daughter! And she hates Tybolt!” I screamed. “You will suffer for this!”

I ran out of the house. I knew exactly what to do, but I needed help. Tybolt had guards, just like the rest of so-called important people in this horrid city. There was no one I could trust, except maybe one person. A person who, supposedly, loved my sister.

Ryder Thorne was shocked to see me at his door.

He lived alone, in an apartment that was actually only a room. But I had to put my feelings aside and act.

“It’s about Alex,” I said.

“Look, Theo, I really care for her. You don’t have to worry…”

“If you’re telling the truth, you’ll help me save her, even if it’s dangerous.”

“Save her!? What’s going on?”

It seems that Ryder does love my sister. When I gave him a gun, his hand trembled. I was glad to notice that, it meant that he wasn’t dangerous, and at the same time it meant that I would be able to hurt him if needed. Anyway, we went to Tybolt’s house. Everything happened so fast, and it’s hard for me to remember the details. Ryder was supposed to get caught breaking in. The guard who stood at the entrance took him in, to inform his employer. I waited for a few minutes, and managed to get into the house easily. I followed the voices to the room where Tybolt was, with my sister. Alex remained calm. She was trying to convince Tybolt to let Ryder go. It was time for me to do what I came to do. With fingers clenched tightly around the handle of my gun, I broke into the room.

All the thoughts disappeared from my mind. I heard myself say: Let my sister go! And I heard Tybolt laugh. I saw Alex’s eyes begging me to leave. I noticed Ryder’s confusion; he wanted me to tell him what to do next. I fired. The guard fell to the floor.

“I told you I’d kill you if you even think of touching her!” I said, pointing my gun to Tybolt.

“Theo, please, let’s just talk,” he was scared, and I loved it. The power was in my hands and it felt liberating.

“Get on the floor!” I ordered.

Tybolt kneeled like a puppet whose strings I could pull as it pleased me. I could just take Alex and go, but Tybolt would want to cure his wounded pride. I had just killed a man and witnesses meant trouble. Also, I really wanted to do it. I fired again. It was easier than you would think.

I looked at Alex and found her confused and terrified. I always wanted to protect her from everything, but I never knew I would one day have to protect her from myself. I had to fix the situation, but I needed time.

“Take her with you,” I said to the frightened Ryder Thorne. “I’ll come for her tomorrow, but you have to make sure she’s safe until then.”

He nodded, but couldn’t say a word. He embraced Alex and they remained motionless for a while. United.

I had to let Alex go with Ryder until I talk to Eric Leigh. Only he could help me and I hoped he would. After all, he needed me. I couldn’t wait for the morning to come and now that it’s here I am without words. What am I supposed to say to Leigh? How to even begin a conversation like this?

And here are the links to stories about other characters for the city of Cyron: Alexandra  Celestine  Gideon

A Person I Admire (Alexandra’s perspective)

The city of Cyron is all we have. We do not know if more cities exist somewhere out there, beyond the safe borders. I hope they do. But just because it is sad to be confined to only one city, it does not mean that we should not feel lucky.

Cyron gives us everything we need. We have our homes, food, schools, libraries and parks. We have our lives. Many people died in the Great War, but our ancestors survived and built this city from nothingness. No one who remembers the War is alive anymore, but only to think about them makes me grateful to be alive.

One of them was Alexander Reming, my great-great-great-grandfather. He was a great scientist who used all of his knowledge to enable this city to grow. I was named after him and I am proud to bear his name. He used his knowledge to do good, and I hope someday I will be able to do something similar. He is the reason my family is even today in charge of West Cyron, while the Thorne family is in charge of East Cyron. I just hope neither of these families will forget what brought us here. It is their turn to do good for the city, and Alexander Reming is a person who could inspire them. That is why I chose him as a person I admire.

I found this old school composition of mine in a drawer in my room, entitled A Person I Admire. I don’t remember putting it there, but I remember reading it proudly to my brother, Theo, many years ago. He wasn’t impressed. I told him my teacher said it was the best composition in class, but Theo responded that I shouldn’t compare myself to others but to try to surpass myself.

Theo was always too much of a perfectionist for his own good, but he meant well. Underneath the serious countenance, he was warm and fragile. That’s why I’m so worried about him these days. He seems his old, responsible self, but I know him well enough to sense when something’s wrong. He’s been working for father at the Ministry, although they don’t get along, which just one of the things that makes me suspicious. And I know he’s worried about me. He always wants to protect me. Especially now when father decided that I should marry his colleague’s son. Theo went crazy when he heard it.

“I went to school with that guy, and I know what and idiot he is!” he shouted at father. “He was a bully then and he is a bully now! I will not allow Alex to marry him!”

Even my mother protested: “You can’t arrange a marriage for our daughter! Besides, she’s just turned eighteen!”

Father didn’t change his mind, he only agreed to postpone the marriage a little bit. I know this is just another of father’s plans to make sure I remain his picture perfect daughter, but I also know he will not give up on it. He could’ve just named me Laura to fit the Petrarchan ideal he wanted to create of me. All the innocent, sweet girls in literature are named Laura. The universe is obviously on his side, since I even look the part – tiny, big-eyed, pale, and blonde. Well, my mother is tiny and blond as well, so I guess I never stood a chance. I even suspect that was the reason my father married her.

I admit, my father’s decision scares me to death, but I don’t want to talk about it to Theo anymore. He looks so stressed even without me complaining. And I know he still hasn’t gotten over Celestine. He still loves her, but he won’t admit it. When did my brother and I stop talking? When was this abyss created between us? And how am I supposed to explain to him that I am falling in love with Ryder Thorne, Celestine’s cousin, the rockstar? Well, star may be an overstatement, but his band is getting more popular each day. At first sight, Ryder and I are the complete opposites, but we actually like all the same things. I express myself through writing and always have a book at hand; Ryder expresses himself through music and always walks around with headphones in his ears. When asked about a favourite colour, we both answer – black. I like it because I find it silent and beautifully dark; Ryder likes it because he finds it expressive and loud. And we both love words. Sung or read, words can say so much, if they are used right.

Do I love him? I think I do. But what do I know? I’m eighteen but I’ve spent most of my life trapped in this beautiful, safe and insanely cold house. I’ve never been in love before.

No, I will not play the role of the “unhappy little princess”! Tropes are boring and I’m sick of rules. Real people surpass any definition. I will find a solution for my unfortunate situation. I will not obey my father this time. I want to become the person the young me would admire.

I think this should’ve actually been the first story in the series, because it explains the setting. Anyway, you can read the previous one HERE. I also decided to name the series East and West. Hope you’ll like them 🙂
